About the ANTHC Emergency Services Expansion (ESE)

Construction update:

Construction on Phase 1A of this project is complete and we are excited to provide patient care in this new space.

Construction is complete on the Alaska Native Medical Center’s Temporary Emergency Services Department (ESD). We began seeing patients in this space on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Temporary Emergency Services Department entrance:

Now that the Temporary ESD is open, patients will no longer present to the Emergency Room located on the northeast side of the ANMC hospital. Patients will present for care to the Temporary ESD, located on the southeast side of the ANMC hospital. Please look for updated signage.

To access the Temporary ESD, please enter from the Diplomacy Drive entrance, as the Tudor Centre entrance is for emergency vehicle traffic. The former Emergency Room entrance is now closed for construction, as we move into the next phase of the Emergency Services Expansion project.

Parking Update:

Most of the ANMC hospital east parking lot is fenced off for construction activities. The limited number of parking spots available in the ANMC hospital east lot are reserved for Emergency Services Department patients.

Additional parking locations include: the ANMC Patient Housing Parking Garage (north of the hospital), the Denali Parking Garage (east of the hospital), and the Flattop Mountain Parking Garage (south of the hospital). There is a marked pedestrian path from the Denali Parking Garage for all foot traffic between the garage and the ANMC hospital.

ANTHC is moving forward with construction for Phase 1 of the ESE project, which includes floors 1-3 and renovations to the existing Emergency Department. Improvements that will come with the expansion of floors 1-3, include:
  • 21 additional Emergency Department patient care spaces
  • 12 new Clinical Decision Unit beds for observation
  • 15 additional behavioral health treatment space
  • 10 new surgery recovery bays
  • New, dedicated drive through ambulance entrance
  • Core and shell design necessary to build floors 4-6

ANTHC is also moving forward with designing floors 4-6 as we seek additional funding to support construction of Phase 2, which includes:

  • 60 new inpatient beds;
  • Private inpatient rooms (converting from semi-private);
  • 32 new adult inpatient beds; and
  • Helipad to enhance trauma services.

While we have a lot of work ahead, we are making significant strides to improve the services we provide.
